Vale Steve Mason

Trinity Willison CC mourns the passing of Steve Mason.
Steve Mason played 41 seasons, starting in the seniors as a 14 year old. When he retired in 1978, he’d made 8,202 runs batted in every position in the order and won 5 fielding awards as a keeper and point fieldsman.
Steve captained the 1st XI over 6 seasons,  played in the 1956/57 2nd XI premiership and won the Best Clubman Award in his last season. He was an important member of the Committee over many years. When the Club was struggling for numbers in the early 70s, he voted to retain the 3rd XI which proved vital in reviving numbers and later success. He retained a strong interest in the club and proudly watched the 1st XI flag 4 years ago in season 2016/17.
Steve was always first to encourage younger players, emphasising that cricket is a game of patience – and patience to outlast opposition is the key to success.
He never panicked at the crease and was so easy to bat with because of his calm and controlled manner. Steve never swore, was a non-drinker yet mixed easily in all company. He served in the Army in New Guinea during WWII and, although he preferred not to talk about it, had an outstanding service record.
His fitness was legendary, running Melbourne Marathons until his late 70s, still walking distances in a frame regularly in the early morning.
A man who established the way Trinity play; a gentleman and a mentor to many.
